Croydon Council Leader Visits South Norwood Islamic Centre

Open Day For New Police Station

On 13 April 2012 members of South Norwood Islamic Centre attended the opening of a new Police Station on Windmill Road, Broad Green. The opening was a success and we hope to work closely with those involved in the future. 

MP Gavin Barwell Hosts Surgery

As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the voices of the community are heard, MP Gavin Barwel conducted a Surgery at the Islamic Centre on 2 April 2012. Issues raised included unemployment, street-crime, and the ineffective planning of road improvement works in the South Norwood area. MP Gavin Barwell gave practical advice and took away some key actions that he believed could make a difference. All in all the surgery was a great success and of great benefot to those who attended.

MET-P Meetings 2012

Location: Hounslow Mosque

This is a program hosted by the Muslim contact Unit at Scotland Yard. We attended these events which took place at Hounslow Mosque on 7 June 2012 and at Finsbury Park Mosque on 15 October 2012. The programmes focussed on developing a better understanding of anti-terror law and Police procedures and strengthening co-operation between the Police and the Muslim Community. Mosques from across London attended the programmes and all three event were deemed a great success.

SLCOM Meeting

Being a founder member of the South London Council of Mosques (SLCOM) we attended this meeting to discuss a range of issues that affect the community. Other larger South London mosques also attended.

South London Mosques Meeting with Police

Organised by the Metropolitan Police and chaired by a Police Commander this monthly meeting is aimed at developing greater co-operation between the Police and the Muslim Community. 20 March 2012.

Westwood Girls School Visit South Norwood Islamic Centre

Location: South Norwood Islamic Centre

Although we are frequently visited by local schools, these are usually year 5 and 6. A year 11 group visit from Westwood Girls School on 23 February 2012 was unique. The visit was very interactive, full of lively discusion and debate. The group left the centre with an increased understanding of the Islamic Faith and we hope that both those taking Religoius Education at GCSE and also those not would have benefited.

SEWA Day Launch Event

Members of South Norwood Islamic Centre were delighted to take part in the launch event for SEWA day in Croydon (15 February 2012). Hosted by the UK SEWA day leader Arup Ganguly and also attended by MP Gavin Barwell.

Croydon Mosques Forum

We hosted this meeting, mosques and Islamic Centres from around Croydon attended, aswel as the Muslim Association of Croydon.

CFER Faith Resource Centre Open Day

Colleagues from the South Norwood Islamic Centre were delighted to take part in the opening of the Croydon Faith Educational Resources Centre (CFER) on 24 January 2012. The opening was honoured with the presence of the Mayor of Croydon and was livened up with presentations from various faith groups. We actively support the CFER and members of our team sit on the committe whcib meets monthly to discuss faith resources and education related issues. Penny Smith-Orr Head of Croydon and Southwark Religious Education chairs these regular meetings.
